The Fort Gay Public Library is a branch of the Wayne County Public Library and serves southwestern West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky.
The library is part of the Western Counties Regional Library System. Patrons benefit from the collections of all libraries in Wayne, Cabell, Putnam, Mingo, Lincoln and Logan counties. There are public Internet terminals along with a wireless Internet connection.
The Fort Gay Public Library provides library services Fort Gay Elementary students every school year. The library offers a comfortable and friendly atmosphere in one of West Virginia's original "outpost" library buildings.
The original carousel-type instant library was installed in 1974 with 1,200 square feet intended to house 6,000 books. Today, the Fort Gay Library houses more than 23,000 books and other materials.
In 2003, grants and gifts from the Norfolk Southern Foundation, The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Foundation for the Tri-State Communities, USDA for Rural Development and Kanawha River Terminals made a 942 square feet addition to the building a reality.
